BambooBamboo is a naturally occurring biological composite, however its microstructure and hence its properties are complex compared to the manmade composites. This complexity arises due to nature's way of adapting itself to perform various functions with maximum efficiency; which is popularly termed as optimization. Due to optimization, it can be assumed that the variation in properties along the thickness of the culm be a smooth transition for better bonding strength between layers and to prevent non uniformity in stress concentration.

Freeze-casting MethodFreeze-casting is templating of porous ceramic scaffolds by the solidification of a solvent. This method was used in this study to create the multilayered ceramic/polymer composites. Freeze-casting is the manufacturing method that can produce hybrid materials with a lamellar or a brick-and-mortar structure.
